Ukrainian media outlets have been accusing Russia of war crimes such as bombing hospitals and overtaking nuclear power plants. This has folks wondering if these are mere Ghosts of Kiev. The images of devastation in Ukraine have stirred up an outcry of support on social media for the would-be Nato ally. Whether this outcry is duly organic is yet to be seen.
The daze of propaganda has become an elephant in the nation’s room, which Twitter addressed on its platform with an event “How to verify information involving the war in Ukraine, according to fact-checkers and experts.” This form of news delivery is via a social media outlet that banned a sitting U.S. President of the opposite party, causing many to take supposed “fact-checkers” with a grain of salt.
Retired U.S. Colonel Douglas MacGregor diverted from the dominant narrative with a take on Fox Business in which he shifted the blame on Ukraine President Zelensky. MacGregor states that Putin’s goal is to demilitarize the country rather than land-grab.
Since the Madrid Summit in 1997, Nato’s has expanded rapidly through Eastern Europe, being met with several warnings of pushback from the Kremlin. For Russia, a militarized Ukraine is one thing, and a militarized Ukraine having talks with Nato is another.
Zelensky has recently backed off from discussions with Nato.
Peace Deal
Putin has justified the invasion by calling for the “demilitarization and denazification” of Ukraine, as well as the recognition of Crimea as of Russian territory. In short, Putin wants a neutral Ukraine. This means no Nato partnerships, nor Russian partnerships. The Kremlin has announced it will cease instantly if these conditions are met.
The demilitarization of Ukraine allegedly involves the destruction of over 30 bio-weapons labs and the disarming of Nazi battalions.
Of course, fighting is ongoing and Zelensky has not yet agreed to these terms, and Ukrainian leadership insists it is fighting a good cause. Ukraine has garnering the support of the Western World as a heroic nation representative of its values. Yet keeping the obvious in mind - that civilians are off-limits, and excuses can not be made for war crimes - we should be wary who we choose to side with until we have the information.
The author’s opinion
is that Nato is pushing false narratives in Western mainstream media about Ukraine to turn global sentiment against Russia for the sake of Nato expansion, and wherever that may lead to next.
